Koh Kai (Chicken Island)

Krabi Attractions | Krabi islands

Thailand's beauty is revived by another beautiful island known as the Koh Kai Island off Krabi. This island is also known as the Chicken Island, Koh Gai or Koh Hua Khwan. The Chicken Island was named after a strange limestone rock at one tip of the island which looks like the head or the neck of an ostrich, or a chicken or like any animal of the fowl family. The vibrant corals surrounding this island make it a beautiful place for swimming and sunbathing.

Location of Koh Kai

At one end of the island there is a steep cliff and moving towards the other end of the Chicken Island tourists can visualize an astonishing beach across the peninsula. Another feature of this peninsula is that, during high tide the peninsula gets flooded making it a small island by itself. Like the Poda Island, the Chicken Island also provides excellent opportunities for snorkeling in its beautiful warm and clear water. The water in Chicken Island is rich with corels, but there are no hotels or resorts to reside in this island.

Beauty of Chicken Island

Tourists can visit this island throughout the year as the Chicken Island is not affected by the monsoon. It is a journey of about 30 minutes from Railay in a longtail boat. Among various trips arranged by different local agencies, there is a four island Snorkeling tour which starts from Aonang or Railay in a speed boat or a longtail and the rates are moderate. This tour covers four spectacular islands such as Phra Nang Cave, Tup Island, Chicken Island and Poda Island. It is a one day boat trip and is highly recommended as there is no accommodation facility in Chicken Island. This island is incredibly beautiful because of the steep riffs and some great beaches, but unlike some other Islands in Thailand, the Chicken Island gets very busy during the tourist season. During the rainy season this island is a lot quieter and peaceful and resembles a deserted tropical island. The Poda Island and the Chicken Island are very close to each other and thus island hopping can be easily done.

The majestic view of the Chicken Island gives immense pleasure to the tourists visiting this island. A day's trip to the Chicken Island gives the tourists a full day of enjoyment with all sorts of thrill, adventure and excitement. Therefore Chicken Island is a must visit for tourists exploring Thailand.
