Koh Yao Island

Krabi Attractions | Krabi islands

Another sensational destination in Thailand are the Koh Yao Islands. The Koh Yao Islands consists of a pair of large islands namely Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai. The total distance covered by these two islands is 137 square kilometers. These islands are situated in the middle of Phang Nga Bay and Koh Yao Islands is equally distanced from Phuket as well as Krabi mainland. In literal English Koh Yao simply means "Long Island" and Koh Yao Noi means a "Little Long Island"., with Koh Yao Noi being the prime destination for attraction with lots of accommodation. The development of Koh Yao Noi is accelerating everyday, but still these islands remain secluded from the crowd in Phuket. In 2002, Koh Yao Noi received the World Legacy Award for destination Stewardship from Conservation international and National Geographic Traveler Magazine for an eco friendly home stay provided by to the visitors by the localities.

Things to do in Koh Yao Islands

Activities that attract tourists on this island are Kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, hiking but the main attraction is the agricultural demonstrations which includes plantation of rubber and fishing. The Koh Yao Noi Islands do not have any particular spots for sightseeing. The new 7-Eleven and the motorbikes on the peaceful streets are two most beautiful things one can come across. Driving is easy here as the road mainly circle the island. One can find beaches which are mainly concentrated on the east coast, but the west coast has a rich plantation of rice fields lined with mangrove trees. Few restaurants and bars are found along the coastline with a small village in the Koh Yao Noi Island. There are beautiful wooden houses all along the road. The roads pass through the rubber plantation and there are mangrove trees standing in the middle of the sea giving an exotic beauty to the Koh Yao Noi Island. One can go around motorbikes and tuk-tuks which are available on hire. The beautiful ragged limestone cliffs makes the suitable place for trekking the interior of the island or the tropical ocean simply makes it a very comfortable place for relaxing on the beach.

The tourists should refrain from drinking outside their resorts or hotels because the local islanders are very conservative about their traditions. Koh Yao Noi Island is easily accessible in long-tail boats from the east coast of Phuket. A taxi can also be hired from the airport to reach the Yao Noi Islands within just 25 minutes.

Koh Yao Yai is another sensational island where one can visit on a bike but it can be said that Koh Yao Noi is a paradise. There are many other beaches to be discovered on Koh Yao for example the Hat Pa Sai which lies seven kilometers from Koh Yao Noi's district office, where there are beautiful sandy beaches which are even safe for swimming. Thus a lot has been discovered and a lot is still to be discovered in the exotic Koh Yao Islands.
